Forget Me Not

Forget Me Not is the story of Nikki, who, after the death of her girlfriend, Sara, decides to undergo a procedure that will erase her memories. As Sara’s ghost tries to change her mind, Nikki must choose between her grief and her past.

Nikki is dealing with the death of her girlfriend, Sara. She is haunted by the memories of her in their shared home.

Nikki is packing everything that once belonged to Sara. Sara's ghost tells her that she is throwing away her favorite things and tries to get her to stop, but Nikki doesn't see a point in keeping the things that only cause her hurt.

Sara, hurt by Nikki's comment, vanishes, only to reappear in a different corner of the house. Nikki, in a bid to lighten the mood, holds up a pink top, suggesting that she can throw that one, considering she doesn't think Sara ever wore it. Sara only replies, "You don't remember."

The next day, Nikki apologises, and Sara goes back to her usual chirpy self. They talk and laugh as Sara lists out how she isn't a stereotypical ghost and can't float or walk through walls. Nikki receives a mysterious text confirming her appointment for a procedure that will delete her memories.

Sara's mood dampens, and she tells her that she can't understand why she is going to take this action. Nikki talks about how she can't continue living like this and needs to move on. Sara, distraught, vanishes.

Nikki suffers a breakdown and is helped by her friend, who tells her how grief and memories are complicated, but she is supported no matter what she decides to do.

That night, Sara reappears, apologetic about the fight. She tells Nikki that she understands why Nikki would want to do something like this; after all, it's Nikki who has to stay here with all the hurt. Nikki shares her grief, and Sara gives her her blessings to go ahead with the procedure. They share an emotional farewell.

On the day of the procedure, Nikki braces herself to go ahead with it. As the process begins, Nikki has a flashback to her first date with Sara, wearing that pink top. They talk, they flirt, and Nikki is reminded of the happiness and love they shared.

Nikki opens her eyes mid-procedure, and a smile appears on her face.

Director Statement

Forget Me Not is a film about grief and memories. As a person, I have always been interested in memories and their relation to our emotions and our reality. Forget Me Not is my attempt at understanding this further. The film, at its core, is about love and the price we are willing to pay to hold onto it. Nikki faces a unique choice where she could delete her memories and get rid of her grief, but at the cost of never having been loved. This central dilemma is something that motivated me to explore it, and I then manifested the other side of the argument in the form of Sara, a ghost trying to fight for her existence. This contrast allows me to drive my point home, where love trumps all, and grief becomes not just the absence of a loved one but an absence of love itself.
