Footprints in the Dirt

Contrary to the biblical story of Eve being created from Adam's rib to be his companion, FOOTPRINTS IN THE DIRT is an altered version; a conversation between Gaia (Mother Earth) and Eve, if women preceded men.

Director Statement

I wrote this film after a long year of soul searching, questioning why, and why not? I was hiking in the woods one day with my daughter, and we got swept up in the smell of the forest and the sound of the river leading us into a deep philosophical conversation. My daughter asked hard questions. Why have we chosen as a species to lean into the era of the smart phone and steer away from walking through the dirt with bare feet? What if we were born into a matriarchy instead of a patriarchy? This led me to think back not only to the first of mankind, but -- the first woman. She was said to be a sinner, corrupted by evil. But I reimagined this tale...

Contrary to the biblical story of Eve being created from Adam's rib to be his companion, I wanted to tell an altered version; a conversation between mother and daughter, if women preceded men.

This film is a women's story, about her growth, her curiosity and evolution. Her divine feminine connection with nature and Earth, and with each change comes sacrifice and loss. Not necessarily bad or good, just evolution. Much like with a marriage, we lose the childlike connection with our family, but we gain a partner and the role of wife and mother, if we choose. Still the severance from the ties of our birth family feels like loss nonetheless. What kind of heartbreak would we experience losing our Mother, Gaia? Our lives are made of endless choices, that bring about change and growth-- none of that is defined by sin. It is human nature to want the unknown. And that is what I set to explore in this film.
