Following Tupac

Tupac Shakur’s voice defined a generation, but was he a prophet of hip-hop or a flawed visionary? This documentary traces his impact through conversations with those who knew him best and the artists and fans who carry his message forward. The narrative blends music, culture, and memory, capturing how Tupac’s art shaped movements of resistance and healing. The story culminates at Nipsey Hussle’s celebration of life, connecting two eras of hip-hop and asking what it means to inherit Tupac’s mantle.

Director Biography - Jacob Huberman

Jake Huberman is the co-founder of Kid Rushmore, an independent production company based in Chicago and Los Angeles. His favorite filmmakers - Wes Anderson and Quentin Tarantino - both draw inspiration from the French New Wave, a movement that also shaped Jake’s creative voice. When he and producer Paul Cantz named their LLC, they took a cue from Tarantino (who named his company after "Band of Outsiders"). Jake’s favorite film is "Rushmore", Paul’s is "The Karate Kid"—and so, Kid Rushmore Productions was born.

Jake has been making films with friends since he was 11. He earned his MFA from Florida State University in 2006 and has taught post-production at the University of La Verne in Los Angeles since 2011. He also trained more than 200 editors internationally through MBC Academy in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Dubai.

Outside the classroom, Jake is an editor with a focus on behind-the-scenes storytelling. He served as a lead editor for the Society of Camera Operators Awards until 2016, honing his skills in biographical documentary work.

Director Statement

"Following Tupac" is a short-form documentary that reframes one of the most mythologized figures in modern culture—not as an icon, but as a human being. This isn’t a bio. It’s an inquiry. Did Tupac walk a righteous path?

The film features original interviews with those who knew him and those deeply moved by him: friends, Death Row Records associates, fans, and contemporary hip-hop artists. Their testimonies lead us through a layered portrait of Pac, culminating at the memorial for Nipsey Hussle, a generational echo of Pac’s unfinished vision.

The film blends observational storytelling with personal reflection, using a self-aware narrative style inspired by directors like William Greaves and Michael Moore. We also mixed media, shooting between RED and 8mm film. And we crossed time, nostalgic but urgent to uncover something potent.

Tupac could resonate with the everyday person and inspire. He spoke of being “a spark for the mind(s) that will change the world.” This film is another one of Pac's sparks.

Thank you for taking the time to watch and for being part of this journey with us.
