In Fly on the Wall, I wanted to shed light on a side of the film industry that often goes unnoticed: the invisible and undervalued work of those who keep productions running smoothly. This short film follows a casting assistant who, despite her skill, patience, and dedication, is constantly underestimated and humiliated by a violent and misogynistic director. At the heart of this story is a harsh reality in the film industry: the abuse of power and mansplaining, disguised as creative authority.
The decision to use a Snorri Cam was essential in capturing our protagonist's experience. Rather than showing her point of view, the camera places us as witnesses, almost like voyeurs, observing every detail of her emotions, making us complicit in her frustration and helplessness. I wanted the audience to feel the confinement and powerlessness that many in invisible support roles experience daily in the industry. It's not her view of the world but the world's gaze upon her, disregarding her value as she shoulders the weight of keeping things afloat.
Fly on the Wall is my attempt to give a voice to these individuals, to show their daily struggles and the mistreatment they endure, especially when those in power impose their vision through verbal, physical, or psychological violence. This film is a call to action to not let those type of directors, producers or anyone with authority, treat you wrong. People who believe that art justifies any kind of abuse and who minimize the essential work of those behind the scenes.
