Keri Pickett is a producer, director, director of photography and photographer whose work focuses on family and community. She is the recipient of a 2017 McKnight Foundation Fellowship in Media Arts and a member of Film Fatales. Her documentary feature, "First Daughter and the Black Snake", won the Courage Award at the Red Nation Film Festival, Best MN Made Documentary Feature from both the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival and the Frozen River Film Festivals and Best Feature Film award from the Portland EcoFilm Festival where the 94 minute documentary received standing ovations in many sold-out screenings. It is available on Amazon and ITunes distributed by Virgil Films & Entertainment.
The Fabulous Ice Age" is Pickett's first documentary feature spotlighting a century of dancing on ice and one man's quest to save the history of the great American touring ice shows Ice Follies, Ice Capades, Sonja Henie and Holiday on Ice to skating today. It is on DVD and streaming on Netflix in 10 languages; distributed by Virgil Films & Entertainment.
Pickett's short film Steel // Spirit features movement artist Yves Musard's exploration of Richard Serra's massive steel sculpture at the Gagosian Gallery in New York City and it won a merit award from the India Cine Festival and her first music video "Annie Humphrey's St. John & Mikwum" premiered at the Key West Film Festival.
Access is key to documentary filmmaking and people need to trust the filmmaker to have the camera disappear. I am lucky to have family ties to this story as the float was built in the same complex where my mom is a snowbird. Spanning the many days it took to make the float was made easy as I was so close by and so I was able to easily come and go, and I had the trust of the community. Bob Harvey's enthusiasm and dedication to the project was infectious and it was this personal touch that made the film meaningful for me and for the viewer. I like to focus on how one person can make a difference so Bob is the one who helps bring us into FLOAT 23 and makes it a more personal story and yet it is about the creative process. I am an artist who focuses on family and community and this film is a good fit for me with full access to the 'Mystick Krewe of Key West.' coming together to make something cool and celebrate their community. I really enjoyed creating this film and I believe the story reveals the creative spirit in the Conch community which I have adopted as my own.
