Director Biography - Alan Markey

Alan began his creative career as a musician, playing with a wide range of bands and professional music groups. This introduced him to the concept of the creative collaborative workflow from an early age: writing; arranging; performing; recording; touring, promoting. It was during early music video shoots that he started to develop a growing interest in filmmaking.

While living in Australia in 2007, he talked his way onto the set of HBO’s WW2 mini-series The Pacific where he spent nine months working as a special abilities extra portraying a WW2-era U.S. Marine. Inspired by this experience, he returned home to Ireland fully intent on pursuing a career in filmmaking and enrolling at Dublin City University where he achieved a first class honors in Multimedia (B.Sc.) in 2011.

This broad media and communications education laid a strong groundwork for all future filmmaking projects. After graduation in 2011 he studied screen acting, screenwriting and film directing at Filmbase, Dublin to gain more insight into the craft of filmmaking. During this time Alan acted in ten short films produced in Ireland. This experience in front of the camera proved to be extremely beneficial for developing strong working relationships with both cast and crew on a film-set environment.

Alan's first professionally produced short film was Fat Freddie's Drop (2015). It featured a mixed cast of professional and non-professional Actors as well as a Crew of both established and emerging film professionals based in Ireland and the United Kingdom. It was selected in competition at the 27th Galway International Film Fleadh where it received positive reviews from industry observers. It was broadcast on RTE2 Shortscreen in March 2016 and appeared at the Court Métrage at the 69th Cannes Film Festival (2016).

Alan's most recent film 'Flat White' tells the story of a young American woman arriving in Dublin, Ireland to find a man she barely know.

I wanted to tell this story about broken parental bonds and the effects of living one's own life to the full at the possible expense of others.
