Flamboyant nation?

The night, the winter. On the words of Montaigne, Renan, Huxley, Hooks or Foucault, a torchlight descent shines, tricolored. What is a nation? Can bodies united and obeying the same movements sum it up, or are they the fascinating and fascinating limit? Or are we plunged into an alien world with disturbing customs? Through images captured on the spot, the film's stake is in any case the estrangement of the gaze, to take up a method tested by Montaigne, the first French-speaking thinker of otherness and belonging in times of war.

La nuit, l'hiver. Sur des propos de Montaigne, Renan, Huxley, Hooks ou Foucault, une descente aux flambeaux brille, tricolore. Qu'est-ce qu'une nation? Des corps réunis et obéissant aux mêmes mouvements peuvent-ils la résumer, ou en sont-ils la limite fascisante et fascinante? Ou encore, sommes-nous plongés dans un monde extraterrestre aux coutumes inquiétantes? À travers des images saisies sur le vif, l'enjeu du film est en tout cas l'estrangement du regard, pour reprendre une méthode éprouvée par Montaigne, le premier penseur francophone de l'altérité et de l'appartenance en période belliqueuse.
