"Fitting" began as a web series in 2021 (garnering positive attention and success, leading to ongoing talks for distribution!) focusing on the theme of balance: Can one pursue their dreams while honoring their family legacy when the two are at odds? This new iteration expands on the intertwined journeys of Sam, a first-gen Asian American, and Zoya, a Muslim from Philadelphia, as they discover their similarities amidst their diverse backgrounds.
At its core, "Fitting" is a story of self-discovery in New York City, where rejection becomes fuel for pursuing dreams. By exploring their friendship, I aim to highlight the richness of POC and immigrant narratives, reflecting my own experiences growing up in Singapore and how my pursuit of filmmaking was met with resistance from a more traditional background. Our leads’ cultural and religious differences deepen their bond, showcasing the essence of New York—a place where individuality thrives.
Their journey through the highs and lows of their twenties resonates with anyone navigating their path and searching for belonging. I want to offer fresh storytelling that emphasizes friendship over cliché romance, ultimately portraying a relatable intercultural journey of self-discovery. As we all seek to fit in, I believe this series will resonate with current audiences looking for something new and meaningful.
After all, aren’t we all just trying to fit in?
