Matthew Benton is a documentary filmmaker and photographer focused on environmental stories through a human lens. Since moving to Malibu & Los Angeles more than a decade ago, he’s has been dedicated to keeping Malibu & local coastlines protected through storytelling & grassroots organizing with Surfrider Foundation LA.
A week after the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires, I reached out to Rosi Dagit, a biologist with our local mountains conservation district, asking how I could help. The next week, I was out in the field documenting two endangered fish rescues that were down to the wire before rains would wipe out everything in their path. It was a difficult day to document the steelhead rescue, with degrading slopes, ash crusted banks and toxic air, I really wanted to convey the feeling of the day for the rescuers and the emotion felt being apart of these efforts to save native species.
To be able to document these rescue efforts, and subsequent rewilding efforts in our neighboring wilderness, was a special invitation I will not soon forget.
