Alexandre Mottart did not enter the cinema through the front door. He forced her out of necessity, with a camera paid at a high price: a month locked up as a pharmaceutical guinea pig, to rent her body to science in order to, finally, film.
It was in 2018, in Liège. Without school, without a network, but with a devouring obsession: to realize his dream of creating stories. He learns alone, in the shadows, to capture the light. He shoots in forests and dark alleys, where his first stories are born
In 2020, he joined the Atelier 7 residency of the collective Les Parasites (L'Effondrement, Canal+), a real revelation in friendships which then brought him to Paris to found Fenrir Productions with Mateo Colzi. Together, they are building a free cinema space, freed from expected forms, where fiction, clips, and films produced in conjunction with NGOs throughout Europe intersect.
His cinema explores dark areas, secret passages, often mixing poetry, fantasy and strangeness. A way of inhabiting reality without ever enclosing it.
Winner of three 48H Film Project grand prizes, from the F.F.S. and the Moscow International Fantastic Film Festival, he continues his work today within the collective.
He is currently devoting himself to directing his first feature-length fiction film (TU WILL BE SAUVAGE) and a long documentary (UN WORLD IN PERIL), always alongside Fenrir.
Fireflies was born from my desire to create a militant film centered on a highly relevant theme: ecological tragedy. In today’s world, where climate urgency has reached a breaking point, it is essential to rethink our relationship to power and the systems that perpetuate the destruction of our planet. In Fireflies, I wanted to imagine a scenario where revolutionaries, armed with powerful technologies, fight back against polluting giants—embodied by corporate leaders who ruthlessly exploit the environment for profit. Using artificial intelligence, these characters are able to hack into the mind of a polluting CEO, an invisible yet incredibly effective weapon in their fight.
The film was also a significant technical challenge. One of Fireflies’ main ambitions was to capture an immersive single-take shot, filmed in a factory setting. This industrial environment, often dehumanized and symbolic of pollution, becomes the central backdrop for a tense and thrilling action sequence. The shoot involved around thirty extras, each playing an essential role in this complex scene, requiring meticulous preparation and perfect synchronization.
Beyond the technical aspects, Fireflies is a film where technology—specifically artificial intelligence—becomes both a symbol of power and hope. It is a way to explore our ability to redirect technologies, often used for destruction, toward a greater good: environmental justice.
