Fiorellina

Fiorellina (that means "Little Flower" in italian) is a 71-year-old beach vendor whose cheerful exterior hides a difficult past. As she pushes her cart along the beach, beloved by children and fellow vendors, the film subtly reveals the complexities of her life through the world that surrounds her.

Director Biography - Giorgia Ciraolo

I am Giorgia Ciraolo, a young director and assistant director from Naples, Italy, with a deep passion for cinema since childhood. I graduated in Modern Literature from the University of Naples Federico II, writing a thesis on Cinema-Vérité, a field that particularly fascinates me. Over the years, I have gained experience working as an assistant director on various film sets, where I have been able to hone my organizational skills and attention to detail.

In 2022, I approached the world of documentary filmmaking through the Procida Film Atelier, a Cinema-Vérité workshop directed by Leonardo di Costanzo and produced by Parallelo41, where I co-directed the film Procida, which was presented out of competition at the 2023 Locarno Film Festival and awarded a special mention at the Pardo Verde Ricola.

In 2024, I participated in the Laguna Film Lab, as part of the Giornate degli Autori at the Venice Film Festival, produced by ZaLab. During this workshop, I created a documentary telling the story of Fiorellina, a 71-year-old street vendor, and the world around her, capturing fragments of her complex life. I continue to work actively as an assistant director and in production, but I dream of growing as a director, developing my creative vision through Cinema-Vérité and other projects.

Director Statement

During summer 2024, I had the opportunity to participate in a documentary filmmaking workshop organized as part of the Venice Film Festival, in the collateral section "Giornate degli Autori," with the production of ZaLab, held in Chioggia. After two days of searching for an interesting subject, I met Mrs. Fiorellina on the beach. Her appearance immediately struck me, reminding me of an elderly woman from Southern Italy, where I come from, in a context that seemed so distant from her.

Fiorellina is a beach vendor selling fruit and drinks. She is 71 years old, yet she manages her cart alone, pushing it back and forth from 9 AM to 7 PM. She is beloved by everyone: the children who help her, their parents, and the other beach vendors. Her work is not so much about making money as it is about staying away from home. Behind her smile lies a difficult life, but after just a week of getting to know her, I didn’t feel it was right to tell the more intimate details of her story. Out of respect, I chose to focus on the world around her, revealing fragments of her personality. I believe that, despite everything, it is clear that behind her cheerful exterior, she is not as happy as she seems.
