Michael Sommermeyer was born near Leipzig. In 1996, he moved to Dresden where he studied history and which became his new center of life, with a short intermezzo in Montpellier.
He made his debut as a filmmaker in 2000 with the super 8 science fiction film "Mars 2006". Many more short films have followed, which were screened with great success on festivals and on TV. Since 2008, he works closely together with Manuel Francescon in this field.
In 2006, he co-founded hechtfilm, together with Ralf Jakubski. His first feature-length documentary Come together. Dresden and the 13th February (2012, director: Barbara Lubich) marked his debut as a producer. Since 2015, he makes found footage mockumentaries, based on old substandard films, with texts by the writer Roman Israel. For 12 years, Michael Sommermeyer was co-organiser of the festival Dresdner Schmalfilmtage, until 2017.
