Best Actress
An industry-outsider born and raised in New York, Brian Karl Rosenthal cut his filmmaking teeth shooting on S-VHS camcorders in High School and editing deck-to-deck. Film school consisted of hands-on experience, staying up way past his bedtime to watch MonsterVision with Joe Bob, and late-night deep dives into the special features of countless DVD's. In 2013, at the height of the DSLR revolution, he tried his hand at YouTube, creating a viral hit in the infamous and critically acclaimed fan-film "Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness". Since then, Rosenthal has created and released several more viral shorts to the combined tune of over 20 million views and was recently awarded BEST FLORIDA FILM for his short, "Fever", in iHorror's 2019 Film Festival. Brian is currently developing several feature film projects, including "The Last Blockbuster", a nostalgia-driven horror/comedy which NerdBasterds calls "The Movie You Didn't Know You Absolutely Need."
I can still remember getting sick often as a child. Recurring ear infections, strep throat... high fevers became something of a routine. And with them, just as often, would come paralyzing hallucinations once the lights went out-- shadows that seemed to take on lives of their own. THINGS I could see and hear that nobody else could, perhaps because they weren't sick, I would reason.
Hearkening back to my own childhood fears, FEVER was born of a desire to pull away from the stigma of YouTube and social media filmmaking, while maintaining my love of horror and popcorn cinema. The goal was to create something original with a totally unique hook, drenched in atmosphere, and universal in its ability to terrify-- all on a shoestring budget of less than $2,000 (affording us just a single day of production). I would have to bring all my tools to bare
The setting, it was decided, had to be familiar... accessible... safe-- the house next door archetype. The script was also intentionally unburdened with depth or complexity-- simplicity and economy of storytelling was key-- FEVER is a proof of concept, and conveying that concept clearly within the production's limitations of time and budget was paramount.
With inspiration drawn from genre classics such as A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and THE RING, FEVER begs a simple question: What if pure evil was contagious, just like the common cold?
Turn down the lights. Turn up the sound. Hope you dig it.
