Julio Dowansingh is a Jamaican American filmmaker and portrait/fashion photographer based in New York City. Dowansingh has been recognized globally for both his films and photography. The stories he produces are dedicated to the groups that are the most marginalized and whose narratives are often misrepresented in the media. The intersectionality of being Black, queer and an immigrant, has influenced his art and the passion behind them.
His debut short film ‘Louder Than Words’ has toured globally at film festivals in China, Japan, Spain, Los Angeles, Boston, and more. Dowansingh looks to directors like Spike Lee, John Singleton, Antoine Fuqua, Ava DuVernay, Lee Daniels, and Ryan Coogler for inspiration as a Black-West Indian director and producer.
