Fair Seas - The Kingdom of Kerry
At the most westerly point in Europe, on the scenic Irish coastline, lies county Kerry, a rugged landscape where the mountains slope down to the wide, open Atlantic Ocean.
Beneath the waves a surprising underwater world lies hidden, full of life, but these waters are also at risk from many threats including climate change, overfishing and pollution. Travelling along the stunning Irish coastline, we hear from coastal communities, exploring their close connection to the sea. Through the community voice, sharing local stories, hopes and fears, we explore how marine protected areas might offer new means to conserve our oceans and protect the natural world for future generations.

Natasha Phillips is an early-career director based in Cornwall, specialising in short, documentary films. After beginning her career as a scientist, her transition into film came through a passion for the communication of complex issues through engaging storytelling. She is a National Geographic Explorer, drawing on her endless curiosity and a forensic eye for detail to direct documentaries exploring fascinating stories from new scientific discoveries, to ancient history and modern social issues.
As a marine biologist turned documentary filmmaker, I aim to combine science and film, exploring new insights into the natural world. This film explores the wonders of the underwater world, and highlights that it's not just exotic far-flung places that host incredible marine life, but also right here in the cold, wild waters of the Irish coastline.
I would love this film to be selected, to highlight the current challenges facing our seas, sharing little-heard community voices and offer new optimism for the future. We need to explore differing ways to protect our marine environment, and by listening to local community voices and including differing stakeholders in the discussions, we can all work together to protect our oceans for future generations.
