FROM FEBRUARY TO HOPES
From February to Hopes is a documentary that follows the post trauma healing processes of children affected by the February 6, 2023 earthquakes in Türkiye, many of whom are living with disabilities.
Emerging as part of the social responsibility project “100 Kids 100 Artworks 1 Documentary”, the film documents a journey across Bursa, Ankara, Malatya, Adıyaman, Kahramanmaraş, Hatay, and Istanbul.
The documentary focuses on moments where children encounter new experiences, create together, and rebuild connections. For some, it is their first journey. For others, their first friendship. And for some, the first time they are able to express their emotions.
Artworks created by more than 100 children become reflections of feelings that cannot always be put into words, while the film observes this process with a simple and sincere perspective.
This is not a story about disaster.
It is a story about what emerges after. About solidarity, often unseen realities, and the many forms of hope.

EN: B. Çağlar Barikan shaped his journey in cinema through his education in Radio, Television and Cinema at Nişantaşı University.
Since 2016, he has developed his career starting as a video editor, later expanding into freelance videography, music video directing, and photography. Bringing together his experience in cinematography, editing, and directing, he places storytelling at the center of his work.
From February to Hopes is Barikan’s debut documentary. The film marks a significant starting point, reflecting both his personal sensitivity and his approach to social issues.
TR: B. Çağlar Barikan, Nişantaşı Üniversitesi Radyo, Televizyon ve Sinema bölümünde aldığı eğitimle sinema alanındaki yolculuğunu şekillendirmiştir.
2016’dan bu yana video editörü olarak başladığı kariyerini, freelance videographer, klip yönetmeni ve fotoğrafçı olarak geliştirmiştir. Görüntü yönetimi, kurgu ve yönetmenlik deneyimlerini bir araya getirerek hikâye anlatıcılığını merkeze almıştır.
“Şubatlardan Umutlara” belgeseli, Barikan’ın yönetmenlik alanındaki ilk çalışmasıdır. Bu film, hem kişisel duyarlılığını hem de toplumsal olaylara yaklaşımını yansıtan özel bir başlangıç noktasıdır.

From February to Hopes was not only a directing experience for me, but a journey shaped by the responsibility of witnessing, feeling, and conveying.
After the earthquake, the ruins left behind represented not only the destruction of buildings, but also the collapse of lives, dreams, and hopes. Yet, within those ruins, we also witnessed a growing sense of solidarity, a renewed life energy, and most importantly, the light in the eyes of children.
With this documentary, my aim was not to remind the audience of the disaster itself, but to make visible the spirit of solidarity and the search for hope that emerged afterward. Because I believe that what truly helps people stand up again is not only physical aid, but also being seen, remembered, and able to exist together once more.
Throughout the film, I chose to focus on the world of children. They are the purest storytellers, capable of smiling despite everything, and of rebuilding the future through the drawings they create with hope.
For this reason, From February to Hopes is not only a documentary, but also a work of memory. It seeks to give voice to places that are often forgotten and to keep alive a sense of belief in the future.
As a director, when I stood behind the camera, my only wish was for the audience to feel not only the pain, but also the strength of renewal.
Because to me, cinema is not just an art watched in the dark. It is a force that keeps collective memory alive, nurtures hope, and contributes to healing.

“Şubatlardan Umutlara” benim için yalnızca bir yönetmenlik deneyimi değil; tanıklık etmenin, hissetmenin ve aktarmanın sorumluluğu ile doğmuş bir yolculuktu. Depremin ardından geride kalan enkaz, sadece binaların değil, insanların hayatlarının, hayallerinin ve umutlarının da yıkılışını temsil ediyordu. Ama aynı zamanda, o yıkıntıların arasında filizlenen yeni bir yaşam enerjisine, dayanışmaya ve özellikle çocukların gözlerindeki ışığa da tanıklık ettik.
Bu belgeselde amacım, felaketi tekrar hatırlatmaktan çok, yaşanan acının ardından doğan dayanışma ruhunu ve umut arayışını görünür kılmaktı. Çünkü inanıyorum ki, insanı yeniden ayağa kaldıran şey sadece fiziki yardımlar değil; görülmek, hatırlanmak ve birlikte yeniden var olabilmektir.
Film boyunca, çocukların dünyasına odaklandım. Çünkü onlar, her şeye rağmen gülümseyebilen, umutla çizebildikleri resimlerle geleceği yeniden kurabilen en saf anlatıcılarımız. “Şubatlardan Umutlara” bu yüzden bir belgesel olduğu kadar bir bellek çalışmasıdır: hem unutulmuş bölgelerin sesini duyurmak hem de yarınlara dair bir inancı diri tutmak için.
Yönetmen olarak kameranın ardına geçtiğimde, tek arzum seyircinin bu filmi izlerken yalnızca acıyı değil, aynı zamanda yeniden doğma gücünü de hissetmesiydi. Çünkü bana göre sinema, sadece karanlıkta izlenen bir sanat değil; toplumsal hafızayı diri tutan, umutları büyüten ve iyileştiren bir güçtür.
