FEMIZID

FEMIZID Facts

The film, based on the published short story “Sekundenschlaf” by young author Yana Svelush, deals with the fears of and violence against women. When they are out at night or alone, fear is a constant companion. Exploitation and bullying at the workplace as well as the constant pressure nowadays bring even more discomfort into the world of women.

Melissa has finally finished work. But before she leaves for her well-deserved weekend, her colleague Gregor shows up and throws a small pile of work on her desk. He acts clearly on purpose. Melissa has no choice, because her boss insists. She has to finish the work. Tired and exhausted from the drudgery, she scuffs to her car. After a long drive, her eyes are already closing. She urgently needs to take a break. Once at the parking place, she looks around. Informed by the news, bad TV series and movies, her inner fears and anxieties are awakening. What if someone wants to mug her here or do something to her? Melissa's bladder forces her to go to the toilet at the rest stop. A white van, suspicious in her eyes, also drives up into the area. She quickly goes into one of the bathroom stalls. After she has finished and wants to go back to her car, she is knocked over and stunned. Melissa wakes up in complete darkness and finds herself in a hopeless situation. Although she is aware of everything, she can neither scream nor move. Her tormentor is the colleague from the office. Melissa has been anaesthetized and is now experiencing her worst nightmare. But when she wakes up and opens her eyes again, she finds herself with the car on the opposite lane. She quickly turns the car around and grits her teeth. Fortunately, there is a rest stop ahead of her on the road. Once there, she takes a short break. She freezes as a white van drives up into the parking place.

SHORT FILM FEMIZID

When I read Yana Svelush's story, it inspired me from the very beginning to create a screenplay of it. What was initially conceived as a simple thriller later evolved to a more complex narrative structure as the material was developed. The result is a work based on reality, which nevertheless lacks nothing in the genre of an exciting thriller.

FEMIZID tells the story of the everyday life of a woman who lives in constant fear and has to cope with it alone. In my understanding, I don't want FEMIZID to be conceived as an escape into an aesthetic of violence. Rather, the short film is dedicated to fundamental questions of human fear. Triggered by the ongoing occurrences between threat, reporting and reality as well as the associated fear that women have to face every day. It is frightening what I had to grasp during my research on this topic.

When I met the character Melissa for the first time, I was immediately taken by her. The sensitive, rather shy Melissa is a hard-working employee in a social system that is built on prevention, oppression and violence. Not least, FEMIZID is about the perception of violence against women.
