Keaton is a Toronto-based Director, Actor, and graduate of Sheridan College's Bachelor of Film and Television program. His directing projects span narrative, non-narrative, and documentary film and television projects, with a focus on stories that challenge how we see ourselves and the world around us.
At the age of 30, Keaton made the inspiring decision to switch careers to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a filmmaker. His experience both in front of and behind the camera provides him with a unique understanding of the collaborative art of film making, allowing him to connect deeply with both performers and crew members to create nuanced, impactful work.
During Poland’s communist period (1947-1989), Soviet authorities imprisoned, exiled, and executed tens of thousands of Poles, a chapter of history rarely depicted in western media. Our short historical fiction film, Ewa’s Letter, seeks to shed light on this overlooked period through a deeply personal lens.
In order to accurately depict the look and tone of 1980s Poland, our student film utilized extensive production design and a handful of key locations shot over 4 days in Etobicoke, Milton and Cambridge, far exceeding the typical expectations of a student production. Most importantly, Ewa’s Letter delivers a powerfully emotional narrative based on both personal firsthand accounts, as well as extensive historical research.
Throughout our festival run, we’ve been privileged to have audience members approach us and share their personal stories that mirror the story told in Ewa’s Letter. Canada is home to millions of people of Polish and Eastern European descent with roots in former Soviet Bloc countries. Showcasing this film fosters meaningful engagement and broadens audience participation, especially among Canadians eager to see their cultural narratives represented on screen.
Thank you for considering Ewa’s Letter for your festival. This project is a deeply personal work for our team and highlights a largely unexplored chapter of post-war Polish history through a distinctly Canadian point of view.
Sincerely,
Keaton Jame Browning, Director of Ewa’s Letter
