Paulo Sloboda is a brazilian filmmaker. His passion is movies and cinema and he won several awards for his short movie "Situationship".
Making this film healed the part of me that needed healing, and I hope other people can heal themselves too.
The film “Everyone has flaws you just happen to know mine” is an observational journey into the psychological conflicts that many artists face. The eternal search for perfection, the internal struggle between keeping a stable job or making a living from art, and the difficulties faced in being accepted in the artistic market are the main themes addressed in the film. The idea for the film began when my wife and I finally decided to give voice to our artistic passion for acting and cinema. After meeting in the theater in 2013 and spending 10 years chasing money and stability, now that we were mature and stable, we sold our apartment, my wife quit her job, and we decided to invest everything in a film that would give us a voice.
We had no film experience, we had done small productions for the internet and a dusty film degree from 10 years ago. We had no partners, apart from a few friends in an artistically limited Dubai, but we didn’t want just any production like the ones being made in the city. It was then that we made the decision to make this film in the best way we could, but always careful not to seek perfection, only the best we could.
The Journey begins, we invested our resources in the minimum necessary equipment, my wife immersed herself in the world of writing, reading the main titles on scritp writing, and I immersed myself in the world of cameras, lenses and lights. Together, in a short time we put together the structure of the idea and refined our learnings. I analyzed the progress in her Cartesian writing and brought the playful part, and she analyzed in a Cartesian way my playful decisions between buying a Black Magic or RED camera.
After 6 months, several script edits, and extensive pre-production work, we did it, using our limited resources, a job worthy of a Hollywood filming. We included our main artistic references, we worked on the color palette and textures, spreadsheets and contracts. We found few, but good partners. We were tempted to make it perfect, but we didn't give in. We booked the planned locations and the work began. 3 days of filming, 3 days of a lot of learning. With a minimal crew, we managed to film the story. We were happy, knowing that another stage was over and another was beginning.
Post-production was, without a doubt, the biggest challenge for me as a director, convincing myself that all those crazy ideas, which make sense on paper, would make sense on screen. Initially, we invested money in editing, sound and color. Thanks to the incredible networking work of my wife, we had an incredible partner, Chico Gregori, whom, from the beginning of the film, only gave me solutions and not problems. I knew that he would help me tell the story that was in my head in the best way he knew how.
However, we had some problems with the editing and color. Initially, an editor and colorist worked on the project, and because it was a different film from what I was used to, the ideas didn't match. I had to edit it again. As for the color, we found a new colorist in Brazil who was more artistic and gave us a feeling that was closer to what we had envisioned for the film, but because the lighting was done in an unconventional way, it still wasn't working. After a lot of study with one of the best teachers of DaVinci, Chris Moura, I managed to learn enough in the program to fix these situations and finally, after almost 2 years, we have a film. The journey was rich and happy. We started this with little experience and today I feel prepared to shoot my next feature film. I look back and am proud. Learning everything from scratch was difficult, but it gave us the lightness of beginners. I hope to carry this with me on my next filmmaking journey.
If just one person understands that it is better done than perfect because of my film. And I will be happy.
Now we are in this last part, promotion, release, etc. and together, my wife and I, writing all the written documents for a film. A short film produced in Dubai with limited resources. It has already worked.
