Director Biography - Matteo Papetti

Matteo develops an interest in cinema already during his high school studies as a mechanical expert. After school, he puts aside his passions to launch into the world of work following his studies but, during the Covid19 pandemic, he thinks about his future, deciding to get closer to the world that has always fascinated him, Cinema. He enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Brescia (LABA Brescia) as a student of Scenography in Cinema and Audiovisual.
After numerous internal projects at the academy, he launches his first completely self-produced short film together with Riccardo Lena and Alessandro Zambelli (with whom he constitutes Horo Production) named Dear Brother with the intention of being able to excite with simple expressions of humanity during a period of humanity that has canceled too much of it. During 2023 he collaborates with Alessandra Pescetta and all of his classmates in LABA and directs the short film ResoNumero0051, winner at the 80° Venice Film Festival of the XII Bookciak category in the context of the Giornate degli autori.

Director Statement

I have always been an emotional boy, and often and willingly I found myself dragged by emotions, sometimes uncontrollably, both positive and negative ones. The memory of certain moments brings back the same emotions, always with the same intensity, finding myself faced with some memories, some blurry, creating a strong sense of unease.
I live dragged by feelings, clinging to the various memories that I can see clearly, but at the same time I remain attached to them for fear of losing them, of seeing an empty and cold space in their place. In the unconscious I come to associate this empty space, this "hole", with death, with the fear of waking up one day and no longer remembering what I experienced the hour before.
And it is precisely for this reason that Èvanescence was born, which more than a short film in itself is a greeting card, a postcard, a photograph in a memory album, a poem to underline to myself, and to all those who find themselves in this situation, how this can be lived with normality and not in seclusion. Whether we are talking about the passing of a loved one or whether we are faced with a lack of memory, we are always talking about loss and pain, for anyone around us. The emotion and human fragility in the face of the impotence of being able to change things is the basis of Èvanescence.
