Between Eros and Thanatos

This video is a collaboration with Patricia Bedregal Velasco de Avila, an amazing musician and childhood friend who lives and works in La Paz, Bolivia. During this pandemic year, she composed the music there and I did the animation in Washington D.C. My ink drawings submerged in water and alcohol respond to the music, together unfolding a renewed tale about love—Eros—and peaceful demise—Thanatos, gods that gave us imaginary solace during these difficult times.

Director Biography - Irene Pantelis

I am a Bolivian-Uruguayan-American interdisciplinary artist based in the Washington D.C. area. Inspired by Latin America’s magic realism, my short films oscillate between representation and abstraction, portraying figures and landscapes at intimate moments that engage narratives of identity, displacement, memory and ecology based on diverse mythological, historical and cultural events as well as natural phenomena. Each work documents a laborious process that layers inks with acids and oils, balancing my ordered and controlled mark-making and editing with the chance and chaos of the materials' natural behaviors. A former labor lawyer, I earned my Bachelors and Masters in Fine Art degrees from the University of Maryland at College Park. My work is held in private collections and has been exhibited primarily in the United States, earning me the American Landscapes, Sadat Art for Peace and Visualizing Migration awards.
