From one world to another is the first-person account of the journey of Eraldo Affinati, one of the most important writers in Italy, and teacher. It begins with the child, perhaps too lonely, who experiences the childhood terror of abandonment and feels the buried and removed tensions of his parents as a burden. Both survivors of the Second World War, they do not have the words necessary to tell, share and in a certain sense understand the human and historical entity of their own experience.
The father, a boy left without a family, grew up on the street, in the Rome of the Fascist years. The mother, daughter of a Romagna partisan shot by the Nazis, escaped Auschwitz, thanks to a daring escape from the deportation train, during a stop in Udine station.
The restless growth of the lonely teenager who sifts through and devours the texts of great literature to conquer that 'word' capable of giving a vital response to the sense of emptiness and vanity of the whole.
'Taking a stand is also the essential gesture of faith. Without writing, life becomes blind, dumb and deaf, but in the absence of true experience, the word risks being sterile.'
Travels in Africa and the discovery of a vocation for teaching. The commitment and stubborn and confident presence in front of difficult kids, the rebels, the negligent, the repeaters, the disinherited, because in them more than anywhere else lives that obsessive 'search' for a word to tell the world your name. 'The writer and the teacher share the same responsibility: that towards the word, written and oral.Which means mending the rift between thought and action, one of the wounds of modernity. At the Città dei Ragazzi I understand what the real revolution should have been, among all those that failed in the blood of the twentieth century: taking charge of the gaze of others.'
The writer who puts everything at risk by inventing, together with his wife Anna Luce Lenzi, the 'Penny Wirton' school for free teaching of the Italian language to immigrants. A project that in fifteen years has spread throughout Italy, with more than 60 offices and thousands of people and volunteers involved. 'Recompose the inner fractures with nouns and verbs, in some cases dry the tears, in others try to make the saved smile.'
The film, shot mainly in Rome, the matrix city, with forays into other 'root' places such as Bologna and the countryside near Forlì, follows Affinati on a journey of constant 'on-the-spot verification', not only to certify his own experience in the face of of our finitude, but also to hand over the baton, the task of fathers to their children immersed in the unknowns of history. 'Discovering our origins does not simply mean going back, but finding food to move forward. Man alone has no weight.'
