Empurau

The elusive Empurau sparks an unlikely clash between a local fisherman from Sarawak, Malaysia and a travelling wildlife photographer from Australia. The fisherman wants to hunt the Empurau for it's healing powers to save his ill mother, whilst the photographer needs to take a photo of the Empurau alive to get published in a wildlife magazine. Empurau is an exploration of culture clash, tourists versus locals, and morality.

Director Statement

As a filmmaker, I am fascinated by the crossover between Asian and Australian culture in my life and the world around me. I want to use the film medium to bring stories of the Asian-Australian diaspora, community and culture to life. I want to broaden the scope of Australian cinema, giving voice to stories and characters that Australia has never seen on screen before.
