Marianela Valdata is a filmmaker, film editor, and director. She holds a degree in Audiovisión from UNLa (National University of Lanús). She is the founder of her production company, Impulso Films. She has been involved in the making of the short film "Abrí los Ojos" (2019), the pilot episode of the series "La última batalla" (2019), and the documentary "¿Y por qué?: Estereotipos en la infancia". She wrote, directed, and edited the short film "The Weight of a Feather" in 2023, her debut work.
"The Weight of a Feather" emerges in a context where society is questioning the structures in which it lives. The short film explores the dynamics of a couple based on assigned roles, an inequitable structure where certain comments and attitudes are harmful to the individuals involved. Despite being normalized, they are accepted as the norm.
Through this brief story, I invite the viewer to reflect on the models we have perpetuated for generations. Do assigned roles or pre-established formulas for connection truly guarantee a healthy relationship? Inspired by Horacio Quiroga's tale, "The Feather Pillow," I found an analogy that vividly reflects what happens when we conform and lose ourselves in a relationship while trying to play an ideal role.
Having predefined roles limits the ability to build a genuine bond between two individuals who choose to share and connect without impositions or mandates. With this short film, my goal was to generate identification with both characters, at least prompting questions about whether the ways we relate are truly beneficial for our personal growth and our romantic relationships.
To tell the story, I conducted extensive prior research in collaboration with psychologists and experts in gender violence. The objective was to authentically portray the everyday attitudes present in relationships, aiming to establish a direct connection with the audience.
Regarding the aesthetic proposal, we sought to depict the wear and neglect within the relationship. While the chosen aesthetic is minimalist, it faithfully reflects this sensation. Throughout the short film, the vibrancy of colors gradually fades, symbolizing the loss of the protagonist's personality."
