ECHOES OF SAUDADE
In the heart of Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest district, a small taverna clings to its soul as one of the last bastions of "Fado Vadio" (Stray Fado) — a special fado tradition where the voices of everyday people sing their hearts out and transform all their pain into something timeless and beautiful.
Here, in this narrow, timeworn space, the bittersweet essence of saudade unfolds: the ache for what is lost, the longing for what will never return. In a district reshaped by relentless tourism, ECHOES OF SAUDADE honors a vanishing way of life. In the middle of all that is Isabel, the iconic owner of the taverna.

For myself, longing is at the core of what makes us human — a quiet ache that gives meaning to what we love. It is the poetry of our hearts, a force that shapes memories, dreams, and even the way we find beauty in loss. In the Portuguese expression SAUDADE, this longing becomes more than sorrow; it holds strength, pride, and love. Like the ocean, timeless yet ever-changing, carries everything within it, only to let it slip away again.
Alfama, the old part of Lisbon, once full of life and tradition, is changing. Its character remains, but gentrification is reshaping its soul. In summer, tourists flood its narrow streets, while longtime residents disappear more and more and taking their stories with them. Already now, Alfama itself became something to long for, a place that exists more in memory than in reality.
This taverna is the last of its kind, where anyone can sing, where locals and visitors meet, where professional Fado singers come after their concerts. It is a rare space of authenticity. With ECO DA SAUDADE, I want to capture this world, where the past and the present crystalizes at one place - shortly, before it all fades into echoes.
