In 2003 he began his studies in Visual Arts at the Universidad del Valle in Cali Colombia. In that season he made his first two short films, an experimental project called "La Distribución" (2005) and another entitled "La Vuelta" (2006) where he began the exploration of his narrative style from the visual, as well as his austere production methodologies. ; exploring from the beginning his favorite genre, the thriller. "La Vuelta" generated good comments among the public of local and Latin American festivals; that allowed him to make a longer experimental film (1 hour) making the medium-length film "In Case of Emergency" (2007). In that same year he traveled to Buenos Aires Argentina to study film directing, there he made a short film entitled "Complejo de Gato" (2008), this time exploring the genre of drama with hints of comedy, this short film allowed him to win his first prize in a film festival, in a space created for Colombian filmmakers based in Buenos Aires. In that 2008 in Buenos Aires Argentina, together with his work team he shot a feature film called "Los Dientes de Tenedor" which has not yet been released. In 2012 he finished his studies in Social Communication and in 2014 he made another feature film entitled "Rogelio", this time in Jamundí Colombia, once again exploring dramatic comedy and working with natural actors from that municipality.
In 2019 he began a new stage based in Bogotá Colombia, he made and exhibited his fourth short film "Ada" (2019), a thriller that was selected in several national and international festivals, in 2021 he made a new short film, a drama entitled "Aporía ”, which explores the crisis of midlife in a young woman who is about to turn thirty without having achieved life expectations. In that same year, Juan Manuel Buenaventura made a short documentary entitled "Oscar" in which he reveals the life of a man who has had to stop his dreams and projects due to cancer. In 2022 he made a medium-length film, creating a prequel to the short film “Ada”, but this time presenting the life of the antagonist of that short in a more intense way, titling it “Edu”, a new thriller for his filmography. He is currently developing a miniseries, another 8-part thriller entitled "The Analyst" that is expected to start filming at the end of 2022.
Parallel to his career as a filmmaker, Juan Manuel Buenaventura works with his audiovisual and advertising content agency It's Done Media, consulting on content marketing, making corporate videos for private and state-owned companies, constantly carrying out scriptwriting. , production design, photography, voiceover, editing and post production of audiovisual pieces for a corporate and advertising market.
In this way, JMB has managed to exercise its audiovisual production capabilities in the artistic and cinematographic spheres, as well as in the institutional and commercial spheres, making synergy in both elements, adding aesthetic bases to corporate pieces and executing advertising and marketing elements to its cinematographic productions, always achieving a interesting diffusion of his independent projects with his production company CULPABLE films.
