"What is your love language?" someone asked me. "Language," I quickly responded. Growing up a Deaf person whose language in both English and ASL was significantly delayed, I spent 13 years in speech therapy and spent a lot of extra time catching up. I have never seen speech therapy represented before. Speech is one way deaf people accommodate others, but I believe one of the most valuable ways to show love to your disabled partner is to make accessibility not feel like a burden. As an adult, I have met hundreds of deaf people who had to learn sign language later in life. Deafness can be lonely, and communication is healing.
