The Measure of Drowning

We no longer recognised neither flow nor forest.
We had been halved, quartered, decimated.
We had been fragmented, shattered.
The measure of drowning is an ecosexual fable about breathing better even when drowning, finding ways to resist the collapse of life and re-nourishing desires.

Director Biography - Laure Giappiconi, Elisa Monteil, La Fille Renne

La Fille Renne – photographer and tattoo artist -, Laure Giappiconi – actress and author – and Elisa Monteil – sound designer and performer -, form a film-making collective. Their research revolves around explicit representations of desire and takes various forms, at the crossroads of dissident poetry and visual performance. They are committed to highlighting bodies, identities and sexualities that are outside the usual normative representations. They develop a singular aesthetic, shooting exclusively on 35mm film or Super 8, fixing timeless, feminist and queer images in these layers of chemistry. In each film, the sound creation allows us to plunge a little further into intimacy and disorder.

They have made seven short films: Vivante, Sirène, Amour, Tandis que je respire encore, Les corps dansants, Fluidité and Échelle de la noyade. They have been shown in numerous festivals around the world, from Berlin to Montreal, including the Sundance Festival, the IFF in Rotterdam, London Short Film Festival, Go Shorts, RIDM, Côté Court, from Athens to Bogota, Chennai, Lahore, Istanbul, Warsaw…

Director Statement

The roots of the short film The measure of drowning come together at the intersection of queer, feminist, ecological and ecosexual movements. This film attempts to breathe new life into the dramatic social and environmental news we face on a daily basis, linked to a form of capitalism that increasingly encourages violence and individualism.
The solutions it explores are the collective, but also appreciating and refocusing on joy, nature and life. Taking care of our connections with others, taking care of our environment on our own scale and enjoying ourselves. Enjoying ourselves alone, together, enjoying ourselves in and with nature.
Nature that is fragile, sensitive and damaged.

To resist.
To dig up the joy.
To sow the pleasure.
To seed the struggle.
To cultivate utopias.
To become one with other species.
To breath.

To continue the collective’s work for this seventh short film, experimental photography was chosen for the cinematography, mixing 35mm colour films with others with altered monochrome colorimetry. Each roll of film was developed by hand using traditional techniques by the cinematographer. Each image was then digitised and processed. This craftsmanship adds an extra dimension to the tangibility and dreamlike aspect of the landscapes.
The sound creation and the music, meanwhile, allow us to plunge a little further into intimacy and confusion.
