I decided to make my short documentary, “Dreams Float Around Us,” because as a Black woman in 2025, I knew the trauma millions of us faced when we discovered Kamala Harris had lost the 2024 Presidential election. In the early days of the new Trump administration, I knew the sense of chaos and anxiety the adminstration’s actions was causing and would continue to pound on us as the days, months and years went on. I knew if I posed certain questions to these 8 Black women featured in the film, that it would elicit vulnerable and raw responses from them. I also knew that their honest answers and concerns would resonate — not only with Black women — but with millions of people in America who bravely face the onslaught of microaggressions, lies, violence and steady cutbacks of essential programs and services that so many of us depend on to sustain our families. I created this film to hold up the hope, determination and bravery that these Black women in the film posses, in face of the fear and uncertainly they face every day, and in doing so, I felt their stories would give all of us a template for surviving the emotional scars and confusion we’ll face, every day, for the next several years.
