Don't Speak Ill of the Bread
Jim Pauliks spent a majority of his youth working in the Kilkus bakery in Brockton, MA and was committed to the art of baking along side his grandmother. Over the years it became apparent that she could no longer keep and eventually had to close it down. In order to keep the recipes within the family she sold them to Jim for a dollar. However, after her death, they vanished. Lost and forgotten, it wasn’t until a recent death in the family where it was revealed that they had been taken.

Zoe Pauliks is a recent graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design. She is excited to share not only the lost history of her family, but the importance of food and how it connects people. The interest came about because of a project in 5th grade where she had to look up her own last name and figure out the origin and what food was eaten in that country. Only to discover... nothing came up for Pauliks. Through the art of storytelling she hopes that this film will make others want to dig deep into their own heritage and find food that inspires those to love the world around them.
This is a letter to anyone who knew their culture before it disappeared, and for those who love to experience other’s culture through food. Don’t Speak Ill of the Bread will inspire a love for eating and hunger to know more about the people around us.
