Doña Sofa
Doña Sofa, a beloved, aging sofa in a Latinx family's home, reflects on her life as the family prepares to move. She recounts the history of her sofa lineage, from her sturdy, floral-print grandmother to her groovy, shag-carpeted mother. As the movers arrive, Doña Sofa fears being discarded, but ultimately embraces her fate with a mix of humor and resilience. She understands that change is inevitable, and she is ready to face whatever comes next, just like the generations of sofas before her.

Sofie Khan grew up with a Mexican mother and a Pakistani father in a Black and Puerto Rican neighborhood in inner-city Chicago. She also spent part of her childhood in bordertown Brownsville, Texas, where she developed a slight Southern twang amidst a whirlwind of experiences. After returning to Chicago, she immersed herself in technology and the arts – dance, music, theater, and writing – to navigate life in the city.
To explore her bicultural identity, Khan dove into sketch comedy while attending college and then began training at the Second City Conservatory and other acting schools in Chicago and Los Angeles. She is immensely proud of her involvement with Teatro Luna, co-founded by Tanya Saracho and Coya Paz, where she created and performed the initial version of "Mexitani" in August 2004. Khan has also collaborated with Salsation! Latinx Sketch Comedy Troupe, Steppenwolf’s Sketchbook Comedy Festival, Rasaka South Asian Theater Company, CASA 0101, and LA’s Funny Women Festival.
Recently, Khan has been presenting virtual excerpts of her one-woman show, "MexiStani: Growing Up Mexican and Pakistani in America," following its sold-out, award-winning premiere at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. In addition to her stage work, Khan has written the short film "Ground Nuts," which was officially selected for the Lakeview and Hyderabad International Film Festivals. The film garnered awards for Best Comedy and a Best Actress nomination at the Couch Film Festival and Toronto’s Alternative Film Festival, respectively.
Khan has also participated in the WBD Access and CBS Pipeline programs as a writer, further expanding her industry experience.
