Director Biography - Loren Blazek

Loren’s career in film started with a series of skateboarding videos that he made for YouTube at age 11. This ignited a creative spark within him, and since then he has made countless more YouTube videos. More recently, he has become engaged in more “professional” filmmaking endeavors – starting with an advertising spot for a local high school and culminating in his attendance at the highly selective UCLA Digital Filmmaking Institute. At UCLA, Loren directed his first film with a full crew, the short comedy “Do You Believe in Magic?”

Loren has always loved writing and has been creating stories since preschool. He is currently working on his first feature-length screenplay, which follows the experiences of a young French soldier in the battle of Verdun, one of the longest, costliest battles in human history. His greatest inspiration is Stanley Kubrick, and his favorite films are 2001: A Space Odyssey and Saving Private Ryan. He aspires to a future career in filmmaking, and hopes to some day write and direct his own films, hopefully starting with the screenplay he is writing right now!

Director Statement

Underneath it all, “Do You Believe in Magic?” is a feel-good comedy. It’s a story in which a quirky, awkward character, Kyle, is ultimately able to overcome his unlikeable qualities and accomplish his goal of impressing the girl of his dreams.

I took this film as a challenge in visual character development. Everything about the main character Kyle is meant to portray visual humor, and that is really what I think makes the film stand out. Through the use of visual quirkiness and comedic elements, I ultimately hoped to not only make people laugh, but also to help Kyle gain the audience's sympathy.

Directing this film was the culmination of my studies at the UCLA Digital Filmmaking Institute in the summer of 2019. It was an incredible experience, my first opportunity to work with a full cast and crew. I hope you will have as much fun watching the film as I had making it!
