Director Biography - Daniel Corboy, Daniel Havas

Daniel Corboy is a multi-disciplinary artist from Western Sydney specialising in film production. Studying at Sydney Film School and the University of Sydney he has gone on to direct film clips, produce art performances and win international film festivals (Mate, Grand Prix at Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival).
Continually creating and adding to an eclectic catalogue across many mediums with the main goal being feature film writing and production, he has found himself as an artist at the forefront of raw, original and unapologetic material.

Daniel Havas is a Hungarian-Australian film-maker. Too arty for film school & not arty enough for art school, he found his footing in an acting school, where he was able to learn directing through an actor’s eyes.

Director Statement

At the beginning of the film making process we wondered whether working as a partnership on a shared vision would be difficult, in the end it was quite the opposite.

Dive was written specifically in mind as a reunion of us; Daniel Corboy, Daniel Havas and Ron Smyck, our actor. We made our first films together at Sydney Film School as teenagers & knew we wanted to make a unique and engaging story again.

Relying solely on physical performance with as little dialogue as possible was key. Not just as an experiment but as a challenge, as most projects we work on are dialogue heavy. This makes exploring difficult & complex feelings in a contradictory character quite hard, but knew through comprehensive pre-production & planning it would come across natural & realistic. We were very interested in making a character that may seem like a disgusting, drunk libertine on first impression, but as the story grows & we start to sympathise with him, we realise he is a family man, a funny man, he’s just having the worst day of his life. These are the days you have to turn to whatever makes you happy, or feel proud, or feel joyous to be on the earth & for our character, just like us as filmmakers, it’s one thing: work.

Dive would always have a strong poetic feel to it from the lack of exposition & dialogue but we are surprised by just how much mystery and drama is there, with many audience members having completely different theories on what happened, this makes repeated viewings even better.

Dive has been a successful experience in storytelling & performance, we hope you enjoy.

Drown those sorrows.

Daniel Corboy & Daniel Havas.
