Disappearer

After experiencing a possible supernatural encounter in her family attic, a teenager invites her friends over to hold a seance. What answers their call, however, is far worse than any ghost.

Disappearer is a queer psychological horror created by current students of the Master of Moving Image at the University of Sydney. At a crossroads towards adulthood, Maddy is struggling with family, school, her girlfriend and her own identity. To top things off, she hasn’t had much sleep since a strange voice began talking to her through her ceiling. With the help of her friends, Maddy conducts a seance, hoping to communicate with the lost soul and help them move on. Unfortunately for the occult-obsessed teens, what’s hiding in Maddy’s attic is no ghost. The friends soon realise they’ve unleashed a monstrous creature which craves mortal flesh. Their only hope of surviving the night… Send the wicked thing back from where it came.

Developed in isolation while in lockdown, the crew pushed to create an engaging narrative while working within the confines of a COVID-safe set. In lieu of direct contact, Disappearer uses cinematic design and melodrama as it takes audiences down the Eldritch rabbit hole of madness. Disappearer draws inspiration from the heightened camp of Hammer Horror and early-Universal monster movies, the pains of teen body horror, as well as author H.P. Lovecraft’s themes of Fear of the Unknown. These references are blended together to tell the tale of queer desire and longing, through the lens of a young bisexual struggling to find her own path while being haunted by an oppressive presence.
