Director Statement

Growing up, I always knew I was different, but in a good way. My elementary school librarian had to ban me from checking out all of the Goosebumps and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books, because it was all that I would read. I specifically remember the Friday night back in 2013, when my mom grounded me for lying about which movie I was going to see at the theater. I had bought a ticket to a PG movie, but snuck into the theater screening The Purge at only 12 years old. I have always been a horror fan, but it wasn't until I began to pursue a degree in Film and Television did I truly appreciate the ingenious business model that is used to create these films: low-budget, high grossing films that have redefined the industry as we know it. I think one of most powerful attributes of the creative mind is the ability to tell a story, whether it be through visual or written means. I have spent my life thus far exploring different mediums through which I am able to do what I am most passionate about: storytelling. Back in 2019, I came to SCAD and have since found a passion for storytelling through a new medium: filmmaking. I've truly found myself in this art form. It is interdisciplinary and multifaceted, just like me. I like to tell stories that can incite powerful emotions in my audience, the most powerful of which, I believe, is fear. It is my responsibility as an artist to make people feel something, to have viewers to be able to take a break from their mundane lives and become immersed in an adrenaline-inducing alternate reality that explores the human psyche.
