Dichotomy

Dichotomy is a short pilot film exploring the themes of morality and ethics and takes place in a dystopian society known as The Circle. Rayne is a young girl subjected to a harsh test system designed to create a pure society. The test has three outcomes: pass, fail, or leader, designating the examinee as the next leader of The Circle. Loosing her older sister Lucia to the test, Rayne is nervous to take the test for herself, unsure what awaits her. When unexpected events take place, she finds herself face-to-face with Edith, the current leader of the Circle. As secrets about her past are revealed, Rayne is faced with a decision that could change her whole life as she knows it. It is up to Rayne to decide the future of the Circle as well as her own future and if she can truly live with the weight of her actions.

Director Statement

Dichotomy is one of my biggest projects yet with the full process of writing, filming and editing taking about 12 weeks. As a person who has a guilty pleasure of watching dystopian films such as Divergent (2014) and The Hunger Games (2012), I loved creating my own take on the dystopian genre. As the film is apart of my Year 12 curriculum, the task was to create an interactive film that invites audience participation and engagement. Even though it is not interactive, the video game screen at the end of the film inspired by Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (2018), aims to invite audiences to reflect on their morals and decide their own journey for themselves. I have absolutely loved creating a dramatic film that divulges in these themes and hope audiences enjoy watching!
