Detroit Freestyle

Detroit Freestyle is a raw and cinematic journey into the artist’s toughest memories. As the rapper performs, difficult moments from his past resurface: fears, vulnerabilities, and obstacles he had to overcome to achieve success. These memories take shape in a dark, abstract space, symbolizing his soul, where a masked boxer appears, embodying his fears and weaknesses. The fight between the rapper and the opponent represents the real struggle he’s faced in his life. When he stops rapping, the boxer fades away, signaling that, at least for a moment, that pain has been confronted and released. Combining visual strength and emotion, the video tells a story of survival, identity, and transformation.

Director Statement

Detroit Freestyle" is a deeply personal project—both for the artist and for myself as a director. From the first time I heard the track, I was struck by its raw intensity. The beat, the rhythm, the flow—it immediately reminded me of a boxing match. It had that same energy: relentless, emotional, and full of fight. That inspiration became the foundation for the concept. The video explores duality. On one side, we have the artist performing in a luxurious, minimal home—a cold, quiet space that reflects both his success and the loneliness that comes with it. On the other side, we dive into a blackout studio where a brutal boxing match unfolds. The fighters represent two aspects of the same person: the Black boxer is the artist’s inner self, while the white, faceless opponent embodies his trauma, trust issues, and the external forces he’s been forced to fight against his entire life. This was not just a stylistic choice. The ringless fight space was meant to feel infinite—like being trapped in your own head. I imagined it as a void, lit only by the flickers of energy from within. We used haze, reflections, and tight lighting to enhance this feeling of being lost but still fighting forward. On a personal level, this video means a lot to me. It’s the biggest project I’ve done to date. Seeing it come to life felt like a small victory over everyone who doubted my journey as a director. Working with the artist was a beautiful experience—his openness and intensity brought the concept to life exactly as I envisioned it. The crew gave everything to bring this vision to the screen, and I’m proud of the emotional and visual weight we were able to achieve. Note: The lyrics of Detroit Freestyle contain strong language and mature themes, including the use of the N-word. This language is used authentically by the artist—a Black performer—as part of his lived reality and cultural expression. As a director, I approached this with full respect and sensitivity, ensuring that the visuals support the emotional truth of the song rather than glorify violence or hardship.
