From the writer: Delta County is a dramatic thriller set in Arkansas and Los Angeles. The film is fictional, but also personal. We lost a close friend during the pandemic and never had the chance to say goodbye. He was a vibrant and prolific actor. We met on my first film in L.A. His family became ours - they were among the very first to hold our newborn son. The pandemic made grieving incredibly difficult. We were all so isolated…that went into the character of Harlowe, and the cycle of grief and returning to life is the through-line of the story. The film begins in L.A., in a place of mourning, regret and distrust, illustrated with starker interiors and arid desert landscapes. As we move through the story, we transition to Arkansas, a return home for both the main character and for the creator. Here the vibrant colors of green grass and blue water, the frolicking deer and reuniting with family embody a return to life.
To shoot and complete the film under the SAG Micro Project cap of $20K, we used what we dubbed ‘the BBS approach - beg, borrow, steal if you must.’ We shot bare bones and used iPhone 14Pros, an anamorphic lens, a GoPro. Everyone worked for reduced or deferred wages. Actor friends said yes. Our Director of Photography, D. Matt Jordan, was enthusiastic and even flew his drone for gorgeous footage. Family donated their houses, boats, woodlands and cars. The Downtown Playhouse in Pocahontas generously agreed to let us shoot a scene there during rehearsals for their final performance. That is a favorite moment in the film, showing local authenticity and color.
We joke that we had thunderstorms, an earthquake, a covid outbreak, strikes and even a rare desert flood to deter production - all of which is true. But it’s the first, the weeklong thunderstorms that were the biggest challenge. We had allocated two days to shooting on the Arkansas River for a pivotal scene. We had to cram it all into three hours. We filmed as much as we could before the lightning threatened, then raced back to the dock. Just before we reached it, there was a break in the weather, and I begged to turn off the motor so we could idle in and get one final, all-important close-up. It worked.
