Deep Outside
Deep Outside is a video dance documentary that follows an educational program delivered at a prison school in Diavata, Thessaloniki (GR) during the years 2023 and 2024 . It attempts to reveal how dance and art education programs promote rehabilitation and a sense of agency among incarcerated individuals. Through movement, collaborative art projects and personal stories, the prison’s students challenge their own self- and pre-conceptions.
The documentary sheds light on the power of dance and art to empower and inspire within the margins of society. We witness students transforming from subjects “in need of correction” to human beings with aspirations and dreams.

Alexis Tsiamoglou (choreographer, dancer, director ) holds a Bachelor (BA) in dance, a Master of Arts (MA) in Fine arts and Political Science and currently is a PhD candidate. He has received the prestigious awards from the Amsterdam Institute of choreography (2013) and from Stavros Niarchos Foundation (2021) for outstanding work and experience. For almost twenty years he has trained individuals, groups, cultural workers, dancers and non dancers of different ages and backgrounds in innovative programs throughout Europe- ranging from museums, institutions, schools, NGO’s, universities and prisons.
He has danced and choreographed extensively participating in many productions for the most significant institutions in Greece as the National Theatre, Athens and Epidaurus Festival, Onassis Cultural Centre, Megaron-Athens Concert Hall as well in the margins of the periphery. Lately he was touring internationally with “ION” of choreographer Christos Papadopoulos. His own works (live and dance films) have been presented in Greece and in festivals abroad.
Since 2015, Alexis creates promotional material, teasers and trailers for theatre and dance companies upon commission.
In 2019 he was commissioned by MOMus – Εxperimental Centre for the Arts to create the choreographic installation Possi(ball)ities for the 7th Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art. His latest work, entitled Requiem – a choreographed portrait, was presented in Athens, Thessaloniki and Larisa. In 2013 he featured in Miki Ambrozy’s award-winning film Fabric of Time, which was screened during the Leuven International Short Film Festival.
Alexis Tsiamoglou shoots, edits and directs most of his own films. From capturing movement to abstract narration, the films are part of his ongoing research on how to expand choreography. What drives his research and artistic/educational work is the questioning of dominant dance discourses and the empowerment of vulnerable groups. He has been drawn to decolonial thought, as a way of reflecting and acting in opposition to prevailing views which heavily condition dance, and as a way of perceiving and reacting to social injustice.
