David is a director & photographer, based in London, England.
Alongside his commercial work, David directs narrative films and documentaries that explore the emotional connection between people and the environment that surrounds them.
Intimate yet stylised images create striking moments that remind us of who we are, and that we are much more similar than we are different.
Community. A word thrown around recklessly on brand decks, yet one I think is deeply baked into our DNA.
While docuseries about food are as popular as ever, most miss the mark by failing to explore the true role food plays in societies around our planet.
Food not only nourishes us, but it connects us. It bonds people with different values, it offers us a platform to express ourselves, and it builds a sense of community integral to our survival. Both mentally and physically.
In a world that is becoming more and more isolating despite technology’s best efforts to bring people together, themes like community, resilience, and interdependence need to become more prevalent.
For me, the best way to do this was through the one thing all cultures have in common; our need and passion for food.
By focusing on remote parts of the world and breaking down a dish into all its parts, we reveal how naturally interconnected we are both as humans and with the nature that surrounds us. Effectively allowing for a reflection on our own relationship with food.
While the story of how we ended up on the Lofoten Islands is one I will leave for another day, the approach to directing Deep Dish was heavily guided by the people we met.
Of course, we had a solid plan and structure going in, but as with all riveting docs, you have to be agile and able to adapt to the story that unfolds before you.
My goal with Deep Dish is for viewers to explore these cultures and cuisines with us, opening their eyes to the potential of community and connection. No matter the environment or circumstances around you, we are all much more similar than you might think.
