Director Biography - S.D. Barrett

As far back as elementary school, SD Barrett was constantly writing short stories and scripts and attempting to convince friends to "act" in them. By the end of high school, her writing skills led her to becoming the editor of the school paper and writing for some local magazines in Baton Rouge. The lack of creativity and strict word limit that comes with being a journalist made SD decide not to pursue it as a career, however.
SD moved from her home in Louisiana to Los Angeles and signed a contract in 2003 with an adult film company that included writing scripts for their high-end features, most of which aired nightly on cable television.
Frustrated at watching directors shoot her screenplays differently than they had looked in her imagination during writing, SD bluffed her way into convincing the company owner to allow her to direct her first movie in 2004. Impressed with the result, directing was quickly added to her contract. SD went on to become one of the most respected filmmakers in the industry and the most prolific director at the company shooting more than 100 movies in 14 years, winning numerous directing awards along the way. While there, SD learned to light, edit and art direct her projects. In 2009, she branched out to shooting music videos.
The entire time, SD also wrote and shopped screenplays to "mainstream" producers but found her background in adult films was an immediate stonewall despite skill or script quality.
In 2024, it was time for a new tactic (and name change) so she joined forces with her cinematographer to prove what they could do and to overcome the discrimination. Together, they decided to self-produce the suspense thriller Decoy and comedy series Woke Up Late because it should not matter where you come from.. only where you are going and how good you are at getting there.

Director Statement

As a writer/director, all of my projects are special to me but some of them carry more importance---such as Decoy. It was complicated to write because I wanted to show every character's motivation (right or wrong) for their actions in the story. It also touches on subjects that are deeply personal to many people (myself included). It was imperative to me that the military aspects were portrayed both accurately and respectfully. I reached out to an old friend from highschool who is a veteran. He was kind enough to offer his guidance and even appear in the movie.
Finally, I wanted to address the dangers of the rampant spread of online imposter accounts and my frustration with the platforms irresponsible unwillingness to handle the problem.
