I myself became a ‘Deaner’ just a few years back. I learned some about this legendary actor, James Dean, after having seen an indie film, ‘Joshua Tree, 1951: A portrait of James Dean’. I then became quickly fascinated, reading articles, books, watching his films, and became more educated about this driven ‘rebel’.
I was surprised at first to find out that James Dean’s hometown of Fairmount, Indiana held an annual festival in his honor and memory, with a parade, lookalike contest, a memorial service, candlelight vigil and more, all in a carnival atmosphere over a handful of days. And that there also is an international community that is bound together from this common denominator, the love of a famous actor who had died tragically 60 years earlier.
With ‘Deaners’, I was determined to capture the essence of the dedicated fans, and to explore what drew them to James Dean. There’s quirkiness, and unique ways that these characters exercise their loyalty, but underneath the unusual exterior most would be able to identify with a relationship between someone and their favorite icon, and to see an example of how we can come together and create bonds with others from the simple starting point of being a fan.
I hope you enjoy the film, can relate to its themes, and bask in some of the extremes of fandom…
Respectfully,
David Garry
Producer / Director of ‘Deaners’
