Director Biography - Martina Amoretti

Martina Amoretti is a recent graduate from the University of Glasgow, where she studied Film and Television Studies. Since she was very little, Martina has been passionate about films and got inspired by features such as "The Goonies" and "The Never Ending Story": in fact, she was touched by the possibility of being enraptured so vividly within a fantasy world and how such a world could be created all around her.

Growing up, Martina is trying to fulfil this childhood dream to be a part of those magical worlds. However, her interest is now shifting between different genres: what enraptures her is the dichotomy between fiction and reality, the different ways in which this very dichotomy can be bent, and what impact can film and fiction have on the ‘real’ world. As a result, she is extremely passionate about character-building narratives, and psychology always plays a big role in her endeavours.

Currently, Martina is attending a Master in Directing at MetFilm School (London) with the objective of cultivating her passion and hopefully, stylising her voice.

Director Statement

"Darkling" is a short narrative thriller film on love, family bonds and the inevitability of life. Everything in it revolves around mystery, as reality itself is always ambiguous and incapable of giving all the answers.

This film captures us into its own world and makes us care about its characters, although we almost know nothing about them. But that is not important: we understand them and we empathise with their choices, because they revolve around the most human concepts of love and survival.

Claire, Peter, Henry and Matthew are groping in the dark, looking for a way out: nonetheless, it is in that very darkness that they manage to find themselves, however briefly.
