DREAMER
CINEMATIC PERFORMANCE / 2 channel video installation
a poetic journey & live performance blending dance, cinema and music into a visceral experience
*
a dream that carries us, inviting us to immerse ourselves in the landscapes and reconnect with the breath of nature and the rhythm of life. To dream of an alchemy, still possible, with the environment and its elements.
.
ABOUT
Transformation and Empowerment are essential themes in Andrea Hackl’s work and equally DREAMER is inspired by a journey of coming home to and celebrating our inner creative life force.
DREAMER
is an interdisciplinary performance featuring a two-channel audiovisual installation.
This evocative work invites audiences on a poetic and visceral journey through film, dance, and music—drawing inspiration from the Tibetan Book of the Dead and underlying cycles of life. At its core, DREAMER is a journey of empowerment, navigating themes of death, impermanence, birth, and liberation. It is an alchemical quest that embraces and celebrates our deep connection with the earth and the natural world.
Like a dream that washes over you, the performance invites immersion—into impressions, colors, and soundscapes. It is a journey both inward and beyond the here and now, traversing forests, limestone cliffs, glaciers, and the high mountains of Europe and the Himalayas. These landscapes emerge as soul expressions—living entities and, at times, partners in a primal dance.
Following its premiere at the Inequilibrio Festival in Castiglioncello, Italy, DREAMER has toured internationally and was honored with the Best Interdisciplinary Live Performance Award at the LensDans Festival in Brussels. The performance features visual material from award-winning film projects by Andrea Hackl, all part of an ongoing, evolving creative path.

“Andrea’s performance, truly innovative in style and content, has deeply impressed and enriched me.
With her sensitivity as an artist and innate talent, she’s made us have the extraordinary experience of perceiving the breath of nature – the rhythm of life.
The performance demonstrates how much authentic art elevates and expresses feelings, emotions, universal values, in short, human existence.” - review

My practice is interdisciplinary and travels between cinema, visual and performative arts.
I produce films, performances and explore the medium of installation and cherish collaborations with musicians and artists of other disciplines. In my performative work – also when moving within a set trajectory – I embrace the immediacy of improvisation.
I’ve always been drawn to both: visual media as well as work with the human body, dance, movement based practices – both practices further complemented by drawing and writing; using language & text in a poetic, rhythmical and sensorial way.
On the one side, the visceral poetry of the body, the body as channel and link of connection, in its presence, interaction and physicality; in dialogue with a place, an environment and others. The immediacy of our presence – knowing that everything living within us speaks.
On the other side, film, photography and installation I see as a gateway, a means of opening up windows, to create, capture, transmit beyond place and time.
Thematically, my work evolves around themes of belonging, transformation & empowerment, life cycles, life and death, trance and catharsis and is influenced by mythology as primal and archetypal expressions of life. I feel a strong inspiration to work with/in natural landscapes and environments – every place has a meaning and equally carries its energy. It is very special to create work in a dialogue with a place, an environment, connecting with its stories, listening to its presence, voice and whisper, becoming a channel to its essence and life.
I am not seeking to document or reproduce reality – I want to penetrate it, open it up, pierce to its core. Performances, installations or films are like journeys we go on and invite an audience to come along on to. I believe that on this journey magic can happen – magic that has the power to bring wonder, empowerment, beauty & transformation into our lives.
Even when traveling through dark, my work embraces life, and the vital power at its core as also within human beings – to manifest, share and, in this way, celebrate a creative core energy.
My desire is to share experiences; a poetic, visceral journey – work that might have the capacity to go and take others beyond rational perception. I believe, through the alchemy of different layers, complimenting, permeating and enriching one another, a dimension beyond the rational is allowed to open up.
