Curupira - Mother of the Forest

The Mother of the Forest ~ Curupira ~ is the story of a powerful Amazonian goddess told through the voices of the Borarí people from the heart of the forest in Pará, Brazil. She is the all powerful guardian of all living beings in the forest. And while she is generous and benevolent in her gift… Beware! If you disrespect her home, her punishments are merciless.

Her warnings are more relevant than ever in a contemporary reality where the forces of agri-business, logging and mining are decimating the forest faster than we can protect it. Her story reminds us that it is time to listen, respect and rekindle a more balanced relation to nature if we wish to protect our common home.

Director Biography - Lea Hejn

I grew up in Denmark and France, my parents taught me wordly curiosity and deep respect for other cultures. I have since lived in the UK and Brazil. I have been experimenting with films since my early teens. I would invent dreamlike scenarios, create characters, recreate famous scenes... there were endless possibilities.
In my early 20s, I decided to make environmental protection my life pursuit. I studied Environmental Policy & Climate Change Law in London. But I got frustrated with the disconnect between the diplomatic circles and the general public. I saw emotional storytelling about the magnificent planet that we inhabitat as the key to bridge this gap.
So I decided to combine my filmmaking passion with my environmental mission. I pursued a Master’s in Wildlife Filmmaking at UWE in partnership with the BBC. My goal is to tell the stories of activists and innovators around the world, who are working on the forefront of the protection of the natural world. ‘Wired Roots’ is my first film, it recounts the story of activist Mauricio Ruiz and his quest to reforest and protect the Brazilian Atlantic forest

Director Statement

"As I listened to the Borarí's stories about Curupira, the goddess of the amazonian forest. It became clear that we have forgotten how to respect nature as societies... Whereas they never did. Maybe it is time for us to remember..."
