Amy was born into a catholic family of a rural north Queensland town, where she attended schools with religious teaching for the first 17 years of her life. In the final years of her secondary education she began to have her eyes opened to a less traditional and less conservative way of living. She moved to Brisbane to pursue a career in arts where she fell in love with story telling and craved hearing the stories of silenced minorities.
Shanae was born in Central Queensland, a smallish town full of familiarity and family but that was never enough for her creative mind. Spending 18 years in a place that never quite accepted her sexuality, her creativity and her love for being an oddball she moved to Brisbane in 2019 to start studying a Bachelor of Film and Screen Media. Finding her way into a Bachelor of Film Shanae almost felt overwhelmed by choice, truly finding out how expansive the industry really is, but with perseverance, a lack of sleep and great friends she made it to the end. Completing a Bachelor in Film and getting insights into the industry has been her greatest achievement so far. She knows the stories she wants to tell and her experiences in her small town, and the ‘big city’ will continue to shape them into her future.
Amy: When I was young, talk of sexuality was something done rarely and with hushed tones. I became obsessed with the idea of learning about the LGBTQIA+ community and hearing their stories. As I got older my interests began pushing me against the grain of my high school, beginning to make every assignment I possibly could, about their history and struggles. This was never met with fondness. So as I ventured to a bigger city with the dream of telling stories, I knew in any little way I could, I wanted to provide a voice to those who were and still are silenced. This story came as a culmination of the experiences of those around me, some from ones who have now spoken up, and others from those still scared to speak, this story, though not direct, is for all of them.
Shanae: When I came out to my Dad he told me that my sexuality didn’t exist. I was told that my feelings and experiences didn’t matter because in his mind it wasn’t real. This crushing reality that my own family, my own town that I felt so connected with in a strange way didn’t accept me and that hurt. But I know who I am, I know how I love and experience this world is real and true. I want nothing more than for other LGBTQIA+ people to know this as well, to feel the love and self acceptance in their lives. Creating this story with Amy has been incredibly important to me and I am so grateful to be able to tell a story that many can relate to and learn from.
