Crawling Across the Frontier: The Capitol Crawl of 1990

“Crawling Across the Frontier: The Capitol Crawl of 1990” depicts the events leading up to, during, and aftermath of the Capitol Crawl, an event that had an instrumental role in spearheading the disability rights movement. The crawl led to the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 which increased disability accommodations and declared discrimination against the disabled as unconstitutional, creating a tremendous ideological shift in society that paved the way for future legislation and provisions that would help millions. Our documentary highlighted 2 key ways that the Capitol Crawl crossed the frontier of discrimination and stigma: the non-violent protests applied political pressure on the government, and the efforts of the protesters displayed attracted national media attention which caused a shift in public perception. The efforts displayed by the disabled touched the hearts and minds of millions of Americans watching at home while knocking on the doorstep of America’s most powerful lawmakers.
