Molly Coffee emerged as an award-winning filmmaker in the DIY stop-motion and puppet scene in Atlanta which segued pretty naturally into a career working in the art department on studio pictures. Molly has production-designed tv shows such as Freeform’s Single Drunk Female and Netflix’s First Kill and feature films like Nicolas Cage genre-horror Willy’s Wonderland. She also makes time to focus on her own films moving into story-telling with a focus on diverse and queer stories. Molly is not only the owner of the fabrication house Zombie Cat Builds but also co-owner of cleared artwork company Action Artwork Rental. Molly co-founded the non-profit Film Impact Georgia with the hopes of breaking down the barriers of entry for Georgia local creators. Molly’s lifelong dream is to hunt for Bigfoot in the Pacific Northwest and you should email her with any sightings.
Interested in finding my next short film, I reached out to friends and colleagues to see if anybody had something that was the right fit for me. When I was sent a zip file with numerous short film scripts, the screenplay for this film “Come Correct” was included. It turns out, the story was very personal to the writer Madison Hatfield and was included by accident. Thus began a weeks-long campaign to convince Madison to let me make this short film. The humor, the vulnerability, and the juxtaposition of Blythe and Agnes’ ability to sit in their queerness had me absolutely obsessed. After many conversations and working alongside Madison to protect her own story wrapped up in Agnes, we were able to move forward together and make “Come Correct.” This film pushes the envelope of what is comfortable for the viewer to sit with and through some laughs and some tears, we hope that everyone takes home the idea that they are worth getting through the hard things. Being in my 40s and queer, I still struggle with ingrained baggage from when I was younger and though my own story might be the flip side of Agnes and overcompensation for declaring my space, the struggles are two sides of the same coin. The story of “Come Correct” touched the hearts of many bringing together a shooting crew of queer, female, and non-binary individuals willing to pour their skill and time into our humble little film and I could not feel more blessed.
