Director Statement

“Coma” is a story about a marriage that lasted too long and about the consequences of emotional neglect and the loss of intimacy. In this film, I intend to explore the quiet destruction of a relationship that does not erupt violently but slowly extinguishes what was once love.

I aim to show how unresolved conflicts and hidden secrets can destroy a marital bond, while also reflecting on a fundamental question: What is love, really? Is it passion, infatuation and complete understanding, or is it the ability to remain with another person despite their flaws, grounded in mutual acceptance and care? Where are the limits of compromise and when does life with someone cease to feel sustainable?

The main inspiration for this film was an interview with divorce attorney James Sexton, who described one of the saddest cases of his career. It concerned a ninety year old man divorcing his wife for a woman twenty years younger. That story instantly became the emotional and narrative foundation of the film.

For me, the title “Coma” is a metaphor for living for years in an emotional void and a life spent half asleep beside the wrong person. It represents a state of emotional numbness, in which habit becomes stronger than feeling. I want to examine this awakening and the consequences it brings. Through the journey of the protagonist, the film suggests that it is never too late to change one’s life, although doing so becomes increasingly difficult after years of passivity.
