M-Alain Bertoni (they/them) is a multidisciplinary filmmaker that crafts stories about human connection, delivered inside a candy-coated shell made of the surreal, absurd, and horrific.
Working in a movie theater can suck. I know from first hand experience! Endless shifts popping popcorn and sweeping theaters blend together, with the occasional hostile customer to shake things up. Oftentimes, what makes the job bearable are your co-workers. And as the hours creep forward, the end of your shift nowhere in sight, the only way to pass the time is commiserating together about customers, talking trash about the movies playing, and just slacking off. Closing Shift is my ode to the movie theater employee with a thriller twist, a reflection on what it means to work a thankless job and deal with customers who treat you as sub-human.
